“You will never be a hero. You were never meant to be a hero."
Hero. that one word made Aru lift her chin. It made her think of Mini and Boo, her mom, and all the incredible things she herself had done in just nine days. Breaking the lamp hadn't been heroic... but everything else? Fighting for people she cared about and doing everything it took to fix her mistake? That was heroism.
Vajra became a spear in her hand.
"I already am. And it's heroine.”

Twelve-year-old Aru Shah has a tendency to stretch the truth in order to fit in at school. While her classmates are jetting off to family vacations in exotic locales, she'll be spending her autumn break at home, in the Museum of Ancient Indian Art and Culture, waiting for her mom to return from her latest archeological trip. Is it any wonder that Aru makes up stories about being royalty, traveling to Paris, and having a chauffeur?

One day, three schoolmates show up at Aru's doorstep to catch her in a lie. They don't believe her claim that the museum's Lamp of Bharata is cursed, and they dare Aru to prove it. Just a quick light, Aru thinks. Then she can get herself out of this mess and never ever fib again.

But lighting the lamp has dire consequences. She unwittingly frees the Sleeper, an ancient demon whose duty it is to awaken the God of Destruction. Her classmates and beloved mother are frozen in time, and it's up to Aru to save them.

The only way to stop the demon is to find the reincarnations of the five legendary Pandava brothers, protagonists of the Hindu epic poem, the Mahabharata, and journey through the Kingdom of Death. But how is one girl in Spider-Man pajamas supposed to do all that?(source goodreads.com)

I must admit,I was really nervous when I was approved for this book. I am a big fan of Rick Riordan and I was really afraid I won't like this book, even though he didn't write this book,it's said it's in similiar vein. But oh boy,how I was wrong! This book has it all: good writing style, amazing characters and fantastic story! Everything was just perfect. I enjoyed every single second. The story itself was serious and I must admit I cried at some points but book was also full of humor! And I felt like I was reading a Rick Riordan's book. I liked Aru and Mini, although I must admit Mini is closer to my heart. She is smart, fierce and so so brave! Aru is also smart and sassy and brave and she is really likeable character. I liked that in this book we had two girls as main characters. Boo was also so refreshing as a character! He showed us that a person can be better and that one bad thing we did does not define us. Also,I don't want to spoil the book, but chapter with Aru and Mini visiting the House... It broke my heart. Although, several scenes broke my heart. This book is dealing with some serious topics and I love it. This book was an instant favorite! And it's even a little bit feminist, which is a plus for me!
Also, the mythology part was amazing! I've never read a book with Hindu mythology and I'll be honest, everything I know about Hindu mythology I learned from this book. But everything was nicely explained and everything felt right.

Perhaps memories are the grandest illusion of all.

So,overall if you liked any of Rick Riordan books or if you like middle grade fantasy or mythology then this a book you will read in one sitting! This is a book full of humor, great characters but at the same time this book will make you cry. It's just a book that will become the one you will cherish forever. It's just enough to say: this a book about two heroines who are just trying their best to save this world together with a pigeon and will they succeed? You'll have to read a book to find out.
