THE STORM IS COMING

Zane has always enjoyed exploring the dormant volcano near his home in New Mexico, even though hiking it is challenging. He'd much rather hang out there with his dog, Rosie, than go to middle school, where kids call him Sir Limps a Lot, McGimpster, or Uno—for his one good leg. What Zane doesn't know is that the volcano is a gateway to another world and he is at the center of a powerful prophecy. A new girl at school, Brooks, informs him that he's destined to release an evil god from the ancient Maya relic he is imprisoned in—unless she can find and remove it first. Together they return to the volcano, where all kinds of crazy happens. Brooks turns into a hawk, a demon attacks them in a cave, and Rosie gives her all while trying to protect Zane. When Zane decides to save his dog no matter the cost, he is thrust into an adventure full of surprising discoveries, dangerous secrets, and an all-out war between the gods, one of whom happens to be his father. To survive, Zane will have to become the Storm Runner. But how can he run when he can't even walk well without a cane? Feisty heroes, tricky gods, murderous demons, and spirited giants are just some of the pleasures that await in this fresh and funny take on Maya mythology, as rich and delicious as a mug of authentic hot chocolate.(source:goodreads.com)

This was such an amazing read! I enjoyed every single page. The story starts with a boom (literally) and it doesn't slow down until the end.
I don't know what I loved more: characters, story or mythology. Or the fact that I have 448 pages to enjoy. What can I say,I love big books and I cannot lie.
The characters... I don't know which character was written better. Brooks, even though I found her annoying in the beginning,I adored her at the end. She was a true friend. She was always on Zane's side, and she always did all that was in her power to protect him. I loved how brave she is,but I also loved how she was brave for both of them. Middle grade books need more girls who are strong, and smart and brave and Brooks is an amazing example of it.
On the other side,we have Zane. Zane is a boy with a limp,a boy with one leg shorter than the other,a boy with a cane,a boy who is afraid. It's amazing to have a disabled rep in a middle grade fantasy book. Awareness about disabled kids, and how much are they being bullied and how hard and frustrating a day can be for a disabled kid is an important subject and I'm glad that it was a big part of this amazing book. What is more important,Zane, even though his limp was mentioned a lot in the book, wasn't defined by his disability. And that's amazing, because in most of cases, people only see kid's disability, but they are not seeing who that kid is. And Zane is one bright and brave boy. It is hard for him to be a kid with disability, but he still was able to fight and be a hero and to be an amazing friend to Brooks.
Of all the other characters,I loved Hondo. Hondo is Zane's uncle, but he was so much more to Zane. He was his support and he was a person on which he could lean to when he needed a break. I liked how Hondo didn't even think about leaving Zane. He was going with him and there even wasn't an another choice. He is such an amazing character, and I'm glad we have a family member that actually was with our main character all the time.
Apart from this characters,I wish we saw more of Mayan gods. Especially Ah-Puch (pronounced as ah-pooch). I thought he is an amazing villain, and I hope we'll see more of him and other Mayan gods in The Fire keeper,a sequel to The Storm runner.

Storywise, there is not much I can say without spoiling a book. But I must say I loved how story was written. It wasn't dull,it didn't slow down, and everything was perfect.
I liked how we learned about Mayan mythology at the same pace as Zane and how we slowly were introduced with all  background story. Although I wish there was even more mythology, but I hope that will be the case in second book of this series.
Everything in this book had a purpose, not even a sentence was too much. Everything was cleverly built and writtten and there is not a thing I could say was wrong or too much,or not important.
Everyone who loves a good adventure with an amazing family rep,and disability rep and amazing friendship and a lot of mythology, they are gonna love this book,I'm sure of it.
